Recently, the innovation environment has changed dramatically due to progress in industrial structure, technology, and globalization. Academia is a major stakeholder in the development of science and technology and innovation. Especially in the medical field, innovation activities using new modalities and technologies, such as drug discovery development in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical services using AI/IoT technology, are being promoted. Industry-academia collaboration is being promoted by basic research, clinical research, clinical field, knowledge as a medical staff, and other aspects of academia.
On the other hand, industry-academia collaboration is accompanied by conflicts of interest (COI); thus, research integrity and COI management are required. The purpose of COI management is to ensure transparency and accountability for society including patients, citizens, and academia.
This paper introduces the purpose and necessity of COI management, and the management of COI for researchers in the medical research field.
