While the importance of psychiatric multidisciplinary teams has long been pointed out, there have been few reports in general clinical practice on the specific outcomes of multidisciplinary teams and the way psychiatrists should relate to them. In this study, we report a case of a patient with higher-order brain dysfunction who repeatedly exhibited severe behavior, including suicide attempts. The patient had reached an impasse in treatment with the psychiatrist, but the patient's progress improved after treatment by a multidisciplinary team consisting of multiple facilities based on the systems approach. The systems approach is well known in the field of family therapy, but it has a wide range of applications in other fields as well. The systems approach may be useful to demonstrate the power of the multidisciplinary team and to manage the team itself, both inside and outside of facilities.
