How has psychiatry perceived child abuse, which has become a social problem in recent years? Herman proposed the concept of complex PTSD in the 1990s, and in the mid-90s, his book "Trauma and Recovery" (translated by Nakai) was introduced to Japan. Furthermore, van der Kolk, et al., who was a trauma researcher, cooperated on developing the concept of "Developmental Trauma Disorder" based on the ACE study conducted at the same time. Thereafter, as our understanding of trauma gradually deepened, complex PTSD was finally adopted in the ICD-11 revised in 2018, and there is a great deal of interest in trauma and attachment, and in the fields of diagnosis and treatment for children and adults who were exposed to adverse experiences in childhood.
In order for future psychiatry to respond to child abuse, it is necessary to understand and spread awareness of trauma-informed care, and to actively participate in the Regional Council for Measures for Children Requiring Protection.
