The working lives of persons with schizophrenia have been improved since the recent changes of labor policies and welfare systems. However, the dissatisfaction of professionals supporting working lives through labor or welfare systems with psychiatrists has been increasing because of a shortage of psychiatrists with supporting skills many studies have verified the efficacy of supported employment (place-then-train policy) for persons with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses to be competitively employed. Evidence-based practice of supported employment requires professionals supporting employment, rehabilitation, and medical services to be on the same team. A psychiatrist in an out-patient service can support the working life of a schizophrenia patient as follows: interviewing family and obtaining life history to know the value system and strength of the patient would be useful to understand their hopes and preferences regarding working life; psychoeducation on mental disorder; creating one team (a psychiatrist, a professional who can co-experience real-world life with the patient, a vocational service specialist, and employer), the members of which have contact with each other; collecting information on the working life to understand the reason for the exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms.
