It is difficult to grasp the full scope of the discussions in Jaspers' "General Psychopathology" (GP; "Allgemeine Psychopathologie" in the original German), because Jaspers' arguments are complex and because of the great volume of the text. In this work, the purpose and meaning of the structure of GP are revealed through references to Jaspers' autobiographies and his philosophical texts. In addition, Jaspers offers his views on major concepts he proposes in the chapters entitled "Understanding" ("Verstehen") and "Explaining" ("Erklärung"), and on misunderstandings, with particular reference to the "understandable=neurosis, not―understandable=psychosis" idea. Although Jaspers' GP is now somewhat outdated, it remains a valuable text from which to learn about psychiatric symptomatology.
