Disorders due to Substance Use or Addictive Behaviours encompasses dependence or addiction. The diagnostic categories and their contents substantially changed between the Tenth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and the Eleventh Revision (ICD-11). One of the most significant differences was an inclusion of Behavioral Addictive Behaviours among the disorders. Pathological gambling, classified under habits and impulse control disorders in ICD-10, was renamed as Gambling Disorder in ICD-11 and classified under Disorders due to Addictive Behaviours. Likewise, the newly established disease concept of Gaming Disorder was included among the same disorders.
Additionally, changes were made to the categories and contents of disorders due to substance use between ICD-10 and ICD-11. A key difference was the inclusion of newly developed diagnostic categories in ICD-11, such as episode of harmful use of psychoactive substance. Hazardous use had been unofficially used for a considerable period of time, but the hazardous use category and its definition were now officially described in ICD-11 (Chapter 24). In previous revisions, a diagnosis of harmful substance use was made based on symptoms presented by the individual who actually used substances. However, in ICD-11, making a diagnosis has also become possible if a person's substance use has resulted in behavior leading to harm to the health of others. Furthermore, the diagnostic guideline of substance dependence was considerably simplified.
In this review article, the diagnostic categories and contents of Disorders Due to SubStance Use or Addictive Behaviors in ICD-11 are concisely described, compared to the contents of ICD-10, based on the aforementioned changes between the two revisions.
