Intellectual developmental disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders that appear before the age of 18 and are characterized by below-average intellectual functioning and deficits in adaptive behavior in conceptual, social, and practical domains. Besides physiological intellectual developmental disorders without a clear etiology, genetic factors, such as genetic diseases and chromosomal abnormalities, low nutrition, infections, neurotoxicity, and neurological disorders, are possible causes. In addition to intelligence and developmental testing, evaluation of adaptive behavior with Vineland-II is important; however, it should be noted that other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders are often comorbid. In addition to medical and educational support, special education, welfare support, and medical assistance are also used. It is essential to continue to provide assistance at each life stage according to the needs of the people concerned.
In this article, definitions and changes in diagnostic criteria in other neurodevelopmental disorders, including developmental learning disorder, developmental speech or language disorders, developmental motor coordination disorder, and stereotyped movement disorder, are addressed.
