The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new guide to aid young psychiatrists in understanding the necessity and usefulness of psychotherapy in psychiatric practice. The guide consists of the following 10 steps:
Step 1. Expert not majoring in psychotherapy insists on the importance of psychotherapy in psychiatric practice.
Step 2. On psychoeducation: historical course, specific issues in psychiatry, content and usefulness.
Step 3. General principles in psychotherapy: acceptance (unconditional positive regard), empathy (empathetic understanding) and congruence: the necessary and sufficient conditions of therapeutic personality change (C. R. Rogers).
Step 4. Psychotherapy in accordance (discordance) with acceptance, empathy and congruence has a marked influence on psychiatric practice.
Step 5. Varying stages of acceptance, empathy and congruence.
Step 6. Difficult conditions for psychiatrists to practice acceptance, empathy and congruence.
Step 7. Trials to practice acceptance, empathy and congruence under difficult conditions for psychiatrists.
Step 8. Mental disorders are divided into two groups consisting of one with disorders for which pharmacotherapy is ineffective and another that includes a considerable number of pharmacotherapy―resistant cases.
Step 9. Usefulness of psychotherapy in cases of disorders for which pharmacotherapy is ineffective and in cases of pharmacotherapy―resistant disorders.
Step 10. Numerous psychotherapies have community and supplementary relationships.
