Little attention has been paid to the fact that Karl Jaspers, who constructed the foundation of psychopathology, was also quite interested in psychotherapy. Indeed, Jaspers continued to discuss clinical psychotherapy in the appendix of his seminal work General Psychopathology from the book'sits first to the last editioneditions. He also extensively rewrote the description of psychotherapy in the fourth edition.
In this paper, I first focus on the change ofin Jaspers' views about psychotherapy as provided in General Psychopathology (1stfirst to 4thfourth editions). I then discuss his thoughts about the ideal therapist, the relationship between a therapist and a patient, and what he felt are the appropriate goals of psychotherapy.
When Jaspers published the first edition of General Psychopathology, the use of psychoanalysis was on the rise, and conversely, spreading, whereas that of hypnotherapy was on the decline. An investigation of Jaspers' view of psychotherapy could contribute towill clarify both the aim and the art of psychotherapy, which in Japan, is usually conducted without depending on any specific psychotherapeutic technique.
