The treatment strategies for depression include pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. To date, discussions about therapies for depression have focused primarily on the difference between these two strategies. The possibility of discussing each therapy in an integrated way was assessed by evaluating the clinical outcomes and biological mechanisms of each intervention, and investigating the mechanism of recovery after combination therapy on the basis of decentering, the experiential learning theory, and the placebo effect. The results indicated that discussing each therapy in an integrated way might be possible if recovery was considered a prospective and dynamic process. Future studies should investigate the psychotherapeutic elements that contribute to treatment outcome.
