The workload of psychiatrists at psychiatric clinics has markedly increased over the last ten years. Furthermore, the quality of psychiatric medical care has also become higher. For example, psychiatrists become responsible for outpatients who attempt suicide (Tokyo High Court Case Sep 2017). Under such circumstances, cooperation with the psychiatrist and other mental care providers is required to improve the quality of psychiatric medical care. In addition to conventional qualified persons, such as nurses, psychiatric care workers, etc., Certified Psychologists join as influential mental care providers. Although clinical psychologist is a private qualification recognized by the Foundation of the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists, licensed psychologist is a national qualification (promulgated on September 16, 2015, enforced on September 15, 2017). Certified Psychologists have two courses; one course to take the exam after going through graduate school for psychology and another course (route No. 2) after 2 to 3 years of practical experience after graduating from a university of psychology. In this article, the practical training during college/graduate school and practical experience program after college graduation at psychiatric clinics is described.
