Physical therapists help patients recover from impairment or disability due to illnesses through assessment of physical functioning and rehabilitation, i. e., physical therapy. Previously, physical therapists only engaged in physical therapy, but as team medicine has become more prevalent, their role in the team has expanded. Regardless of whether one works in the field of psychiatry, when functional impairment occurs, further impairment must be prevented by swiftly providing physical therapeutic interventions and arranging the environment such that patients can increase their activity in accordance with their recovery level to facilitate early discharge and re-participation in society. Physical therapy provided in the area of psychiatry requires an understanding of both physical and mental aspects, and physical therapists alone cannot always administer functional training smoothly. It is important that other professionals understand the physical therapy that physical therapists administer, and especially when physical therapists are having difficulties providing therapy, that physical therapists and other professionals exchange information. For functional recovery, not just physical therapy but activities conducted in daily living are also important. To help improve the condition of the illness and physical function, it is important to gather information from relevant professionals about environmental settings, methods of assistance for certain actions and about effective activities to draw out the best performance.
