In a multi-disciplinary team for psychiatric clinical are, psychologists perform psychological assessment using psychological tests. This report covers the basics of psychological tests, including "what psychological assessment is, types of psychological tests, and the timeline from being ordered to administer the test to providing feedback," to more applied functions, such as "things to keep in mind when sharing the results of the test, utilization of the test by multi-disciplinary teams, and potential changes brought on by the test," which may lead to wider utilization of psychological tests. The assessment of intellectual functioning and that of pathology is performed during the clinical interview, but psychological tests additionally provide objectively quantified information about unconscious wishes, defenses, and maladaptive patterns and self-functions that are not readily recognizable from verbal accounts. The author strongly thinks that the information and perspectives gained from such psychological tests should be incorporated into the treatment. On the other hand, the use of psychological tests is not without difficulty, demonstrated by the following critiques that "each test administrator differs in terms of experience, skills, and capacity," "there may be discrepancies between what is expected out of the test and what the test can actually offer," and"the clinical reality cannot provide sufficient time to administer the test and analyze its results or to share the gained information with other professionals." In order for the tests to be utilized more effectively, in addition to self-improvement by psychologists, mutual communication between them and non-psychologist professionals is important, in which the latter communicates "what they hope to get out of the test" and the former responds with the test results addressing the needs and information that are directly relevant to treatment.
