Although sedative antidepressants are widely used in the clinical setting for treating insomnia, they have not been approved for this purpose by the government. In addition, the effectiveness and safety of sedative antidepressants for insomnia have not been thoroughly demonstrated. Therefore, most guidelines avoid recommending the use of sedative antidepressants for patients with insomnia. Research findings and guidelines are not consistent with clinical practice, and there is no general consensus on the appropriate use of sedative antidepressants for insomnia. When developing a treatment strategy for insomnia, it is important to focus on accurate evaluations of insomnia symptoms and basic intervention such as sleep hygiene guidance. In recent years, the effectiveness and safety of new hypnotics with new mechanisms and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia hass been reported. In consideration of these aforementioned aspects, this paper discusses how to use sedative antidepressants cautiously and appropriately as part of any insomnia treatment strategy.
