The meaning of meeting a patient's family members is easy to understand by addressing the situation from two directions: "Approach to the family members mind" and "Approach to the real family members," and identifying the characteristics of patients and family types as well as intervention techniques. In order to understand the approach to the family members mind, ①a genogram and ②the object relations theory can be used. A genogram uses symbols indicating men and women, the line of family relationships, and family conflict. Through a genogram, we can clarify the history and characteristic features of a patient's family. It is known that two people with an unstable relationship, e. g. couples with conflicts, tend to make a triangulation involving a third person (e. g. daughters with an eating disorder).
Therefore, it is important to find out the genogram triangulation. In order to reveal a family's understanding through the object relations theory, the kind of objects present in a patient's mind as well as how the emotions and desires connected to internal objects affect the current problem (e. g. marital conflict, parental relationship, nursing care relationship, etc.) are researched. For the triangle of focus, we need to consider ①the current problem, ②internal objects relationship, and ③the emotions and desires connected to internal objects. This is a useful technique for psychotherapy. In the approach to the real family, we introduced three points: (1) joining,(2) information sharing as well as revealing family anxiety, and (3) consideration of physicality. In joining, psychiatrists create a good relationship with the patient in the first interview by identifying the culture of patients' families, and respecting the sense of value that families hold. Today, medical information is easily accessible. Thus, it is important for psychiatrists to provide correct information to patients' families as well as to relieve family concerns. Presently, both patients and families have some physical problems, as a result, psychiatrists should also pay attention to familial lifestyle, such as diet, sleep, and exercise.
