Despite the rapid increase in the number of psychiatric clinics and acceptance of their presence in the society in the recent years, their roles in local healthcare are not clear, and they are often subjected to criticism, especially over the issue of overdose. The primary factor of the issue has been said to be polypharmacy of psychotropics by psychiatrists.
It is said that those who committed suicide suffered some form of mental disorders, and many of them visited psychiatrists. However, the reality of the situation has not been revealed because it psychiatrists consider it a taboo to bring forward suicide committed by their own clients. However, client's suicide is unavoidable for psychiatrists. Thus, despite the taboo, Saitama Association of Neuro-Psychiatric Clinics has investigated the reality of suicide and actual suicide cases since 2007. Recently, the Japanese Association of Neuro-Psychiatric Clinics also commenced the same investigation. Needless to say, the suicide prevention measures to be committed by the psychiatric clinics must be in line with actual situations. Suicide often involves issues beyond the field of healthcare, which could be too significant to be borne just by individual psychiatrists. Thus, the focus of future suicide prevention measures at the psychiatric clinics in local communities should be in collaboration with relevant local bodies.
