Pain disorder has lost its independent position in the diagnostic criteria of DSM-5; however, it remains an important issue in clinical practice. It is often refractory, adversely affecting patients' daily activities, and causing social losses. In this paper, the authors surveyed the clinical pictures and background psychological or psychopathological conditions of inpatients with pain disorder treated on the psychiatric ward of Jichi Medical University Hospital over a decade. There were 12 patients (3 males and 9 females) with pain disorder (DSM-IV) out of the 1,955 patients treated on the ward during the period from 2005 to 2014. The subjects were classified as a depressive group (two patients), neurotic group (eight patients), and miscellaneous group (two patients) according to their background psychological conditions. In particular, the patients in the neurotic group were refractory. Their pain symptoms were considered to be due to an intermediate condition between neurotic and personality disorders.
