Optogenetics, the use of channelrhodopsin:genetically‒encodable light‒activated proteins, allows the manipulation of specific neural circuit elements with millisecond precision. It has been 10 years since the discovery of channelrhodopsin, and optogenetics is now widely accepted as a powerful tool for addressing causal relationships between neural activity and behavior.
